The Magic in the Pool of Making
Years of pollution and misuse have put the River Planet in danger. Manny, a mysterious and starving Sand-boy is the only person who knows how to put it right. Now, through a simple act of kindness, Johin is entwined in this dangerous quest.
As the River Planet is drawn further into a deadly drought, and the only water is guarded and rationed, a Mud Girl, Johin, saves the life of a dying Sand Boy called Manny. In return, he shows her the magic of the Lightwater, and she is drawn into a seemingly hopeless quest to revive the River that is the life of the planet, and to Unmake the pollution that is killing it. Johin’s inner struggles to make herself worthy of Manny’s quest are admirable, whilst his quiet wisdom and determination to go on are subtly reassuring. Through their trials, The Magic in the Pool of Making deals simply and beautifully with issues diverse as racism, apathy and the environment in a story for children which teaches that our own selfish impulses can be overcome by love, determination and a willingness to do what is right.
Beth Webb’s writing is for all ages; Manny’s glittering enemy Brilliance will be recognised by older readers as a fools’ gold illusion, whilst younger children will delight in the picture of the greedy elder being turned into a crocodile and the Water Guard becoming a donkey so that he can help those less fortunate. The Magic in the Pool of Making is a story to be enjoyed by old and young alike. - Miranda Latham Jackson
